Frisbeegolf is a sport based on the principles of golf, but it uses frisbees to throw into a goal basket. The roots of the sport can be traced back to the late 1930s, when Frisbee inventor Walter Morrison got the idea for the Frisbee in 1937 when he and his girlfriend threw a container lid. In 1946 Morrison drew the plan (called the Whirlo-Way) of the world to the first flying saucer.

Frisbee golf began to take shape as its own sport in the 1960s in the United States. The first official frisbee golf course was established in 1975 in California. The sport spread quickly, and frisbee golf became a popular pastime in different parts of the world.

Frisbee golf in Finland arrived in the 1980s. First a permanent frisbee golf course was established To Meilahti in 1983.

The sport's popularity grew rapidly, and today there are hundreds of Frisbee golf courses in Finland, and the sport has established itself as a popular outdoor and competitive sport. Frisbeegolf offers a versatile and social way to enjoy exercise and outdoor activities.

Frisbeegolf in a nutshell

The goal of the players is to throw the frisbee into the basket with as few throws as possible, and the winner is the one who completes the course with the fewest number of throws.

Players need a frisbee golf puck for each throw. Discs differ in weight, trajectory and shape. Putters are accurate, but their flight distance is shorter. Midrange discs are versatile, while drivers offer long flight but require skill and control.

The game experience starts from the launch point of the first fairway and culminates in the goal basket of the last fairway. Alternatively, players can use different object goals, such as trees and poles, to replace the traditional goal baskets used on frisbee golf courses.

Frisbee golf courses are usually classified by degree of difficulty, length, and the general playing area by. The classification aims to provide players with information about the characteristics of the course, so that they can choose a challenge that suits them. The difficulty of the course is classified by letters: AAA-A, BB-B, C and D, and there are three equipment levels: 1, 2 and 3. Courses with a DB classification are recommended for the beginner player.

Gamen passage

The game starts from the first opening position, which in frisbee golf is known as tee. The members of the throwing group, i.e. the team, perform their throws in turn, after which we move on to look at the placement of the pucks. The next throw is started from where each player's puck stopped on the previous throw. The player whose puck is farthest from the goal basket throws first, and the others wait patiently behind him. Be sure to count your throws.

Throwing continues until the puck rests in the frisbee golf cart. The important thing is that the disc is inside the basket, and not, for example, on the roof of the basket. Let's move to the next fairway to the opening place after the fairway ends, and each throw is recorded. The winner is the one who completes the course with the fewest throws.

The challenge of the course is increased by natural obstacles, such as trees and bushes. These obstacles are an integral part of the sport and are not intended to be moved, removed or damaged during a round of play.

Certain tracks may also have unplayable areas called “Out of Bounds” (OB) areas. These areas are usually marked with sticks or string. If the puck ends up in such an area, one penalty throw is added to the score. The game continues from the point where the puck entered the unplayable area. It is also possible to throw again from the same place as the previous throw, but with a penalty point, if so desired.
